The Adamson-Eric museum in Tallinn will host the opening of documentary photographer Juhan Kuus’ exhibition “The Measure of Humanity. 45 Years of Documentary Photography in South Africa” on August 19th.
Juhan Kuus was an internationally renowned photographer of Estonian descent who was born and worked in South Africa and documented the events there over several decades. The Juhan Kuus Foundation was established to create and manage the photographer’s archive – Hedman Partners played a key role in assisting with legal issues.
The exhibition’s curator Kristel Laur said that the Foundation’s key goal is to preserve, study and promote the photographer’s portfolio. “We turned to Hedman Partners for assistance because we have noticed their contributions towards culture and creative industries. We also had to seek solutions to several copyright issues,” Laur said.
Hedman Partners’ managing partner Merlin Salvik said that the law firm believes in supporting meaningful projects on the Estonian cultural scene. “Our unique know-how in the field of intellectual property rights helps us to contribute towards preserving and developing Estonia’s cultural heritage. This is not just a cooperation project born out of goodwill, but also a great opportunity for our intellectual property rights team to solve exciting challenges,” noted Salvik.
The exhibition focuses on Kuus’ three main creative periods, when his sharp eye was on South Africa’s history and the apartheid regime, but as a self-proclaimed anthropologist-documentalist Kuus’s photos also expressed deeply human stories. Kuus was twice awarded the prestigious World Press Photo award. At the height of his career Kuus served as a correspondent for the French photo agency Sipa Press in South Africa.
The exhibition is organised by IKKUN and the Estonian Arts Museum’s Adamson-Eric museum and will remain open from 19th of August until 15th of January 2017 at the Adamson-Eric museum, Lühike jalg 3 in Tallinn.
